Well, well, well, what do we have here?

Looked out the sliding glass door today and see little black pellet like pieces on one of the stepping stones, my first thought-that’s poop from a fat tomato hornworm:

Tomato Hornworm Poo.

I went outside to inspect, and found big papa:

Crunching away!

It was neat to watch him chew for a whopping two seconds before I was no longer amused at the rate with which he was devouring my tomato plant. See the pile of leaves underneath him? Unfortunately, he had to go.

Fun Saturday Finds!

Seth and I have a tradition, breakfast on at least one weekend day each weekend, and in San Diego, the opportunities for breakfast are endless, lucky us. We get up early, get to a yummy spot and catch up, or as we say, have “talky time.” This morning, we headed for La Jolla because there was a specialty bakery I wanted to swing by afterward, also in La Jolla.

We went to one of our favorite spots in La Jolla, The Cottage http://www.cottagelajolla.com/. They have a fabulous patio, great food and service, and will let you sub the best looking fresh fruit you’ve seen for anything that comes with your meal (i.e., grains). I highly recommend the Mediterranean Omelette, with the best sweet Italian sausage you’ll taste!

After we finished up, we headed for Julian Bakery http://www.julianbakery.com/ where I wanted to buy a loaf of their new, only one of it’s kind, Paleo Bread. Yes, that’s right, Paleo Bread, and they even make two kinds (almond and coconut). I opted for coconut this morning, and also found a small jar of organic, natural apple butter, which I’ve been in the market for too. Can you imagine, bread that doesn’t have an ingredient list the length of the Great Wall of China? Welcome back bruschetta!

Farmers Market Success!

Last night Seth and I went to the North Park Farmers’ Market http://www.northparkfarmersmarket.com/ which takes place every Thursday evening from 3-7pm. It was our first time there, and we really enjoyed it. Small, yet covered all the bases quite well! We ended up with some great local and organic finds:

  • New York Strip and Filet Mignon, grass fed, pastured beef
  • Raw alfalfa infused honey
  • Heirloom and roma tomatoes
  • Peaches, nectarines and pluots

Looking forward to dinner tonight 🙂

I heart you Dexcom!

I had my endo appointment this morning at UCSD with Dr. Edelman, and I was so excited to see that my A1C was in the 6% range again, with virtually no lows. Until I started wearing Dexcom, I had never been able to get my A1C below 7% while pumping, without starting to experience frequent and severe low blood sugars. It wouldn’t happen, and couldn’t in order for me to be safe.

I’ve been wearing the device pretty much non-stop since I started working at Dexcom over a year ago and have had one year straight of consecutive A1C’s in the 6% range, I’ll take it!  At first I thought it was beginners luck (kind of like when I started pumping, everything was perfect, then it went kersplat), but it has continued. The information that it provides me on a daily basis has been invaluable (enlightening?) to me, and I feel absolutely lost and uncomfortable without it. Those trend arrows are priceless and I need them to get through my day.

Anymore, I almost can’t remember what it was like to not have type 1 diabetes (like I lived for 25 years of my life). Now, I barely remember my type 1 diabetes life without Dexcom.

Even when ziplining in Belize-my Dexcom was the one thing I couldn’t leave behind.

400 Tomatoes

I’m fairly sure that Seth is tired of hearing me say, “babe, can you help me stake the tomatoes, again?”  I planted 6 plants this year, all different varieties, based on my lack of success with organic gardening last season. I thought I’d be doing good if 2 survived-ooops!  Add a little quality soil and persistence with organic pest control, and they have turned into monsters.  He is already rethinking how we’re not going to be doing this all summer long next year.

They’re gorgeous and there is one I can barely touch the top of while standing on my tippy toes. They smell absolutely amazing, and turn my thumbs into real green thumbs (or hands or arms).

Gardening is rewarding, challenging, and I’ve found it to be very relaxing (i.e., blood sugar dropping). It is one of the things that is on my 2012 to-do list.

Juliet Grape, Legend Heirloom, Early Girl, Better Bush, San Diego, Orange Oxheart, I can’t wait! Soon I’ll have 400 tomatoes, then it’s time to learn to can.
