Boney’s Bayside Market-Coronado, CA

Years ago on our first tour of San Diego, I stopped in to Boney’s Bayside Market in Coronado. With my passion and appreciation for food, how I nourish my body and mind, as well as how food in general is being viewed in our society, I thought while I was over on Coronado this past Sunday, I’d swing by to see what kinds of fun things I could find.

It’s like a smaller, local Whole Foods, without the Whole Foods Prices. I was super impressed. They have a fabulous selection of quality produce, meat, dairy, gluten-free options, and a great section of quality supplements. Part of the appeal is that when I asked anyone questions, they were super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly – which gets a huge vote in my book!

At the meat counter I noticed a lot of grass-fed meats and quality chicken. When I was approached if I had any questions, I said, “of course! Is your grass-fed meat also grass finished?” His eyes lit up and he said, “it is! All the way grass-fed! In addition, our USDA Prime options, are also grass-fed.” Fabulous. He had a look on his face like how the hell does she know to ask that? Haha. Great news! As it’s not frozen, but also a great selection of frozen meats such as bison. Win!IMG_3172

I also found sprouted corn tortillas, with nothing but sprouted corn and sea salt. I don’t eat corn, but am curious to see if I can digest sprouted corn/seeds, so thought I’d give them a go and make fresh fish tacos or something similar.

Paleo Treats – Rations for the Driven? YES. I love them, and I love supporting local, they’re based right here in San Diego. I had yet to try their Bandito which surpassed all of their offerings moving to the top right behind the famed Mustang Bar. Holy mother of yumminess. I bought all the Mustang Bars (ooops) and all but one of the Bandito’s. The cashier said, “we are selling out of these like crazy!” I said “well, of course, they’re amazing!” IMG_3174

In addition I found a bunch of other fun stuff (raw cream, Suja, Two Moms in the Raw, etc.) and can’t wait to start stopping by more often! I am going to reach out to see if I can get them to start stocking pastured eggs 🙂 Then, I wouldn’t have to go anywhere else for anything!! I highly recommend for a neighborhood market that has quality offerings with friendly service and supports local businesses.IMG_3175

3 Phase Paleo by The Paleo Parents-eBook Review!

3 Phase Paleo eBook Review, by The Paleo Parents!

Three things. Three, that’s all. 1) Swap, 2) remove and 3) Heal. Okay, maybe 4? The 4th being your motivation, but with a user-friendly, simple and helpful eBook to get you on your way, that won’t overwhelm, you really only need three things! It can be so easy to become overwhelmed when going against the “grain” of everything we’ve been taught our entire lives, however, deep down, nobody really wants to take the easy way out. Regaining and maintaining control of your health is far easier than most think, with resources designed to be user-friendly, simple, and useable on a consistent basis. Enter, 3 Phase Paleo, Transition your family in 3 easy steps by Stacy and Matt, The Paleo Parents.

I am honored to have the opportunity to review The Paleo Parents first published eBook! Do you know their story? It’s inspirational on so many levels. If you’re not familiar with The Paleo Parents, you should be. Their effort to take control of their health by making lifestyle changes and then taking it further to create a real food and healthy lifestyle for their three young boys, is just plain awesome. They’re the bestselling authors of Eat Like A Dinosaur and Beyond Bacon, they manage their beautiful blog at www.paleoparents.com, and co-host and produce a top reviewed podcast, The Paleo View.  They’re practical, and they don’t judge – which is hands down, my favorite thing about their approach to this lifestyle!

When I transitioned to a paleo lifestyle, I was introduced by a friend and was about 60% on my way; I just hadn’t realized I was somewhat “paleo” yet. I started researching, removing harmful foods/ingredients, but it has been a LONG process. And I stress, long. I googled constantly and initially felt like all I should eat, was salad without dressing. If only, I’d had a guide that didn’t make me feel like I was a complete failure if I indulged in chocolate here or there, or had a little rice. That’s exactly what 3 Phase Paleo is. A non-judgmental, informative, supportive guide filled with help.

Phase 1: Swap

Their phase 1 is my favorite, in part because it suggests removing chemicals/ingredients that are harmful to our health, but if struggling or trying to attempt a transition, still indulge in things like gluten-free pasta or grains. Much of the perception of paleo is “if you eat that you’re going to hell” but that isn’t the case. If you want some pasta, at least eat gluten-free! It’s a step, or phase, in the right direction. This is what Phase 1 is all about. Remove the refined, processed ingredients, and swap them for real replacements. You’re not perfect, and this eBook doesn’t expect you to be!

Phase 2: Remove

This phase is so vital, but easier than most might think. After having swapped and removed refined and chemical based products, it’s time to move forward with removing additional food that most may think are beneficial and nutrient filled, but are not and may be causing more damage to our bodies and health than we’d ever think. Phase 2 is somewhat experimental to try to determine if your body can actually tolerate these foods. Mine, can’t tolerate beans, peanuts, soy, and dairy in normal American standard portions. The explanation at the beginning of Phase 2, of what exactly grains, dairy, legumes and processed oils are, as well as the impact they have on health, is extremely beneficial.

Phase 3: Introduce Healing Foods and a Healing Lifestyle

Phase 3 is where I’m currently at. I suffered for so many years, and went through oodles of diagnostic testing and drugs with no result. Not until I completed Phase 1 and Phase 2, did Phase 3 come naturally, learning more as I go. I had no idea what “super-foods” were until I went paleo. It isn’t acai. As stated in Phase 3 of 3 Phase Paleo, its bone broth and gelatin, seafood, organ meats, fermented foods, etc.  This section addresses the autoimmune aspect that most of us deal with today, and just don’t realize through modern medicine. There are foods that can help heal.

Included in each phase of the 3 Phase Paleo eBook are helpful guides, food swaps, a pantry guide, shopping lists, etc. already created for you, to help you transition your lifestyle. The Paleo Parents provide multiple brand names, and recommendations of where to buy more nutrient dense ingredients for you and your family. Everyone included.

Last, the eBook is filled with their amazing recipes (Blueberry Breakfast Cookies, I mean seriously? And Crab Balls, aaaahhh!)! They’re easy and will help everyone continue on their 3 Phase Paleo transition, making it a lifestyle and helping families understand that eating healthy is easy, in 3 phases!

Now, if I could just get them to San Diego for a book signing 😉

Recipe Remake-Ham Balls!

One of the things I’ve been into recently (possibly brought about by the holidays) is attempting to recreate my family’s traditional recipes into paleo-friendly recipes. My fave family recipe happens to be Ham Balls, already including the most important part, MEAT! 😉 They’re like little cooked salty meat balls drenched in a tomato based, vinegary, sweet sauce. Mmm. Recreation went great, except I forgot I normally cut the recipe in 1/2 (that’s about all Seth and I can eat ourselves…next time I’ll freeze), so my neighbors got a pan for their family!

Here’s the original recipe:

Ham Balls:

  • 2 1/2 lbs ground smoked ham
  • 3 lbs ground beef
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 cups milk

*combine and mix well. Form into 50-60 balls. Place in shallow pan.

Sauce:

  • 2 cans tomato soup
  • 3/4 C vinegar
  • 2 tsp dry mustard
  • 2 1/4 C brown sugar

*combine sauce ingredients and pour over ham balls before baking.

Paleo-Friendly Ham Balls

Ham Balls:

  • 2 1/2 lbs ground smoked ham (at the least, certified gluten free!)
  • 3 lbs ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 C grassfed dairy/cream of your choice (could maybe use butter too!)

*combine and mix well. Form into 50-60 balls. Place in shallow pan.

Sauce:

  • 2 BPA free cans of organic tomato paste (you know, with only tomatoes in them)
  • 1 1/4 C vinegar
  • 2 1/4 raw, organic coconut sugar
  • 3 tsp dry mustard

*combine sauce ingredients and pour over ham balls before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

So comforting, and not overly sweet. It seemed like an awful lot of sugar to me (I don’t eat much), but when you spread that over 60+ meatballs, could be far worse! They keep a long time in the fridge too, so this would be a great weeknight easy reheat for any family! I’ve eaten them plain, with eggs, on a cheese board, at breakfast, lunch, etc.!

Pre and Post-bake! (looks like I was eating bacon while cooking).

Mushroom Bisque

I heart mushrooms, of all kinds. I don’t discriminate. This has the perfect nutty, comforting flavor! The truffle really comes out with the use of both the oil and salt.

Mushroom Bisque

  • 1 package shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 package white mushrooms
  • 1 package crimini mushrooms
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 5 cloves garlic, diced
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 container (like the rectangle) chicken stock
  • 1/4 teaspoon yellow curry
  • 1 tsp truffle salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 TBSP white truffle oil

In a stock pot, begin sautéing the onion and garlic in 1/2 of the truffle oil on medium heat, seasoning with ground pepper. Just when the onions start to change color and become transparent, add all mushrooms. Continue sautéing everything until the mushrooms become soft. Add all the remaining ingredients, and bring to a boil. Turn down and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Use an immersion blender right in the stock pot to blend into a creamy thick bisque! Serve immediately.

It reheats very, very well. Despite the coconut milk, it doesn’t taste coco-nutty because of the addition of the yellow curry. You could easily add garnishments like scallions, bacon bits, thyme, etc.!

Paleo Book Signing (s)

Large cities = awesome for book signings. Go San Diego.

This past Sunday, I was fortunate enough to attend a book signing for The 21 Day Sugar Detox with Diane Sanfilippo from Balanced Bites, and Bill and Haley from Primal Palate (aka, paleo tour). I’ve met Diane before, but was thrilled to have her sign her newest book (for my collection of real food cookbooks-her Practical Paleo was my first signed Paleo book), and hear her talk. I’d never met Bill and Haley, but am a BIG fan. So down to earth and just genuine people spreading the health. I had three books for them to sign – Make it Paleo (their first book, and a must for new to Paleo, easy, minimal ingredient recipes), Gather, The Art of Paleo Entertaining (probably one of the most beautiful cookbooks I’ve seen), and their newest book, The 30 Day Guide to Paleo Cooking. They signed each one differently with a nice message (okay, maybe Hayley did that 😉 ), and it was fun to just talk with them.

Also in the crowd-George from Civilized Caveman, Tonja from Flame to Fork, Diane’s fiance, and I spied a few others too 🙂 Such a fun afternoon!

Diane!IMG_2949Last fall I was fortunate enough to attend Danielle Walker’s book signing for her first book, Against All Grain. Her story is absolutely so inspiring. She’s fabulous and if you have the chance, go meet her!

Danielle! A little blurry, but that’s okay 🙂IMG_1589Next up, Chris Kresser in a couple weeks in La Jolla! OMG. Your Personal Paleo Code.
