Cruel Reminders

I guess this could go in my category, Diabetes Firsts, the first post of which can be read here.

Last night I changed my insulin pump site, to a new side of my body, and my most reliable area for absorption and cooperation, shall we say. I hovered just a tad bit higher than I normally do post site change and could literally feel the stinging sensation of insulin being pumped into my body. This morning after working out, still stubborn. After a couple boluses of insulin over the course of a couple of hours, still just plain stagnant and higher than I’d prefer. Okay, site isn’t working, time to change.

Head downstairs to the bathroom here at work to change, upon removal, lots of blood and kind of a red round area where it looks like it bled out underneath the skin. Insert second site, and lots of blood immediately fills the tubing…it was so fast, yet seemingly slow. I stood and watched, wondering if it was going to stop. I’ve never had that much blood upon insertion. Site change fail # 2. It’s only 8:45am.

Back upstairs to my desk to get another site from my on hand stock (now depleted) and head down to the bathroom again for site change # 3. Yeehaw! This one isn’t bleeding and doesn’t sting. Crossing fingers.

I’m generally a very positive person and am for the most part on diabetes autopilot, but there are times when I am so cruelly reminded of what it means to live with this disease, I just want to say fuck you and the horse you rode in on, type 1 diabetes.Infusion Site 1Infusion Site 2Site

Rosemary Apricot Spaghetti

I am not eating meat. This is a tragedy, but it is wreaking havoc on my digestion right now, so I’m taking a little break to see if things improve (they have, and pretty quick, too). SAD. Also, no avocados or eggs, they’re not digesting either. What am I eating? Plant based foods! How long can this last? Not sure!

Rosemary Apricot Spaghetti

  • Pre-roasted spaghetti squash
  • Fresh rosemary
  • Organic dried apricots
  • Himalayan pink salt
  • Black pepper
  • Grass-fed butter

I reheated the spaghetti squash with grass-fed butter, Himalayan pink salt (trying to change salt quality), black pepper and rosemary. When butter was melted and squash was hot, I added the organic dried apricots, cut in half, and heated a little more so they were soft, but still a little chewy. I don’t typically eat dried fruit, but I had them leftover from a recipe, and they needed to be used. They were organic, and preservative free.DSC_0462

April DIY Health Challenge!

In the month of April, Greatist and Social Workout have joined forces to create a DIY Health Challenge. You can read more about the challenge and join, here. Full disclosure, this is my first experience with Social Workout, and I really like it! Reminds me of a social networking site for healthy living.

The April challenge will be a great way to keep myself motivated in a different way, as well as hold me accountable. It requires 20 minutes of strength training per day and cooking at least one healthy meal for yourself, per day. Then, you log what you do (of course you can go above and beyond the requirements!), and share with others. You can encourage others, share recipes, and there might be a little friendly competition. Join me! Grab some co-workers, friends, or neighbors and form a team today!

Let’s jump start spring 🙂

Happy Birthday Dad!

Happy Birthday to my Dad. He’s the best Dad a girl could have. It’s times like these that I miss my family even more, and wish we were closer.

Last Thanksgiving while I was home in Iowa visiting, my dad and I spent a day together seeing Iowa, and checking out different places. One of the places we went was the High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid, Iowa. We had a great day spending time together and enjoyed cooler temperatures with warm sunshine.BridgeBridge 2Bridge 3Bridge 4Bridge 5
